Why the cheapest drainage quote is sometimes the most expensive fix.

A drainage quote that goes straight to a price for "a new drain" without first investigating why water is behaving as it is has skipped the step that actually determines whether that drain will solve the problem. Standing water, a boggy lawn and dampness against a foundation can each be caused by several different mechanisms — a grading issue, compacted soil, a blocked existing pipe, or a genuinely inadequate discharge point — and each of those causes calls for a different, and differently priced, fix. Investigation is what separates these causes from each other; without it, a contractor is pricing a guess.

Both scenarios start with a similar symptom — standing water — but investigation reveals different causes and very different remediation costs.

Paving trapping water against a fence line

A visual investigation during rain shows the paving was laid with a fall toward the fence rather than away from it, rather than any underlying soil or drainage system fault. The fix is regrading a section of the paving base and adjusting falls, not a new drain. Investigation cost is minimal, around $300–$600 for a site visit and assessment, and the total project including the regrading fix typically lands at the low end of the Entry band, around $2,500–$4,500.

A fuller investigation, including soil testing at depth and an assessment of how the drainage interacts with an adjacent retaining wall, reveals compacted clay subgrade combined with water being redirected by the wall's own drainage outlet. Because the fix needs to be coordinated with the retaining structure and clay soil rules out simple soakage, the remediation is a combination of subsoil drainage and soil improvement. Investigation cost here is higher, around $1,200–$2,000, and the total project including remediation typically lands in the Typical to Complex range, commonly $16,000–$24,000.

  • Observe the site during and immediately after rain, not only when dry, and if possible get a contractor to do the same.
  • Ask explicitly what investigation has been done before a remediation quote is provided, and what it found.
  • Confirm existing finished levels and where water currently wants to go before any new pipework is designed.
  • Identify the lawful discharge point before any drainage system is designed around it.
  • Get a fuller site investigation, including soil testing, for anything involving water near foundations or retaining structures.

Frequently asked questions.

Why does a drainage investigation cost extra before I even get a fix quote?

Because the investigation is what determines which fix is actually needed — regrading, soakage or piped drainage are priced very differently, and a contractor cannot accurately quote a fix without first understanding the cause. Skipping this step does not remove the cost, it just risks paying for the wrong fix.

Can I skip investigation and just ask for a new drain?

You can, but it carries the risk that a new drain treats a symptom rather than the underlying cause — for example, adding a drain to a lawn that is actually suffering from soil compaction may not resolve the problem, meaning the drain cost is spent without fixing the issue.

Is regrading always cheaper than installing a new drain?

Where a viable fall exists to regrade toward, yes, it is usually the cheaper fix. It is not always viable, though — if there is nowhere for water to fall away to, or the volume of water is too concentrated for surface grading alone, piped or soakage drainage becomes necessary regardless of cost.

How do I know if my soil can support a soakage system instead of piped drainage?

This needs to be assessed directly through soil testing at the relevant depth — free-draining sandy or loam soils generally support soakage, while clay or compacted soils generally do not, but this should be confirmed on site rather than assumed from soil type alone.
