It's tempting to think of planting and lawn installation as the moment the work happens — the turf goes down, the plants go in the ground, and the job is essentially done. In practice, installation day is the easy, visible part of a process where the outcome is actually decided over the following weeks and months, largely by two things that have nothing to do with species choice: how well the soil was prepared beforehand, and how consistently the new planting or turf was watered while it established. A beautiful species list and premium turf laid onto compacted, under-prepared subsoil will still struggle, while a modest species list installed with proper preparation and follow-up watering will usually thrive.

This matters most on new-build sites, where construction traffic routinely compacts the subsoil into something closer to a driveway base than a growing medium, hidden under a thin, deceptively normal-looking layer of topsoil. Skipping the work to identify and fix that compaction is one of the single most common reasons new lawns and garden beds fail within their first two years — and it's rarely obvious from the surface until the problem has already shown up as dead patches, poor growth or a lawn that simply never thickens up.
