Prevailing wind exposure is often the single biggest reason an outdoor space goes unused, more than temperature. A space that is technically warm enough but constantly buffeted by wind will still feel unusable, so this is usually the first factor worth resolving.
Shade & sun
Afternoon shade in summer and sun access in winter rarely come from the same orientation — priorities need setting. A space shaded perfectly for a hot February evening can be cold and underused through winter unless both seasons are considered together.
Rain cover
Even partial cover meaningfully extends usable days across a New Zealand year, since a lot of otherwise pleasant evenings are cut short or avoided altogether purely because of the risk of a passing shower with no shelter available.
Circulation
Flow between kitchen, seating and garden should not require detours around furniture or planting, and a space that's technically comfortable but awkward to move through still won't get used as often as one that flows naturally.

Windy elevated section
Wind shelter is prioritised before shade; a combination of a solid screen on the prevailing side and layered planting elsewhere resolves comfort without fully enclosing the space. Getting the screen orientation right matters more here than its exact material or finish.
Sheltered, shaded courtyard
Existing shelter is good but winter sun is blocked; the brief shifts toward opening sightlines and adding reflective, light-coloured surfaces rather than more screening. Sometimes the fix for an underused space is removing an element, not adding one.

Should I prioritise shade or wind shelter first?
In most cases wind shelter, since a windy space still feels unusable even when the temperature is otherwise pleasant, whereas shade can often be added or adjusted more cheaply afterward with planting, umbrellas or a smaller structure.
Does a pergola actually keep rain off, or just sun?
It depends entirely on the roofing material — an open-slat pergola gives filtered shade but little rain protection, while a solid or polycarbonate roof genuinely extends usable days in wet weather. Confirm which one the brief actually needs before choosing a structure.
How much does adding power and lighting typically add to a project?
It varies with how far cabling needs to run from an existing supply, but it's meaningfully cheaper to plan and install alongside the main build than to retrofit into finished paving or decking afterward.
Can planting alone solve a wind problem, or do I need a built screen?
Planting can work well for moderate exposure given enough time to establish, but on genuinely wind-exposed sites a built or combined solution usually performs better in the near term while planting matures alongside it.
