02 · What decides the planting plan

Wind firmness
Open flat sites can be exposed for long periods, so species that hold their form and root well against sustained wind matter more here than in a sheltered inland city.
Cold tolerance
Cool temperatures through much of the year mean a planting plan needs to perform outside a narrow warm-season window, not just look good in summer.
Wet-soil tolerance
Wet periods are regular rather than occasional, and low gradients mean some beds genuinely sit wetter than others — species need matching to that, not fought with drainage alone.
Shelter sequencing
On an open section, a windbreak or shelterbelt planted first changes what can realistically be grown behind it later, so sequencing matters as much as the final species list.

A Waikiwi section has an open southern boundary that catches the prevailing wind across the full width of the property, while a corner near the house stays comparatively calm. Rather than one planting plan for the whole garden, the brief splits the site: a wind-firm shelterbelt goes in along the exposed boundary first, chosen for cold tolerance and root strength rather than appearance alone, while a wider, softer palette is reserved for the sheltered corner once the shelterbelt has had a season to establish. The exposed bed's soil is also checked and amended for wetness before planting, since the low gradient across that part of the section has left it slower to drain than the rest of the garden. The established rear garage limits direct barrow access to that corner, so the planting sequence is also planned around carrying material in from the side boundary rather than assuming a clear run from the driveway.
