North-facing volcanic bank behind a townhouse

The bank drains fast and receives full afternoon sun, ruling out species that would suit a shaded courtyard a few streets over. The plan leads with drought-resilient, structural planting suited to free-draining ground, reserves a small irrigated pocket near the house for softer seasonal colour, and budgets establishment watering as a defined line item rather than an assumption — because the bank's own drainage works against new planting in its first year.

04 · Before planting begins

Set the garden up to establish in its actual microclimate.

  • Confirm which microclimate category the site falls into — coastal, gully, volcanic bank or sheltered infill — before finalising a species list.
  • Have soil assessed if the site is volcanic, coastal or recently disturbed by building work.
  • Plan establishment watering for at least one full dry season, especially on free-draining or exposed sites.
  • Match planting density to a maintenance routine you will realistically keep up.
